The Historic Hotel Alex Johnson proudly welcomes Chubby Chipmunk – Hand Dipped Chocolates and the opening of their new storefront in the lobby of the Hotel Alex Johnson.
Chubby Chipmunk’s Deadwood location has been open since 2005, opened by owner Mary “Chip” Tautkus. Her plan was for a small, one-woman operation specializing in hand-dipped truffles; but fate saw a bigger future for the woman who says she puts love into every piece of chocolate she makes. Four months after opening her doors an editor from Rachel Ray Magazine stopped by for directions to the Badlands, ate all of Chip’s sample truffles and decided to do a story on Chubby Chipmunk. “When the story came out, I was actually scared it would be too big. But it wasn’t. It was just the right amount and, so…that brought people in,” says Tautkus.
Whether you want to tickle your taste-buds with dark chocolate and caramel, dive into the nostalgic flavors of a root beer float truffle, or spice it up with jalapeno infused chocolate- the Chubby Chipmunk produces a chocolate experience for all tastes. Chubby Chipmunk’s truffles have been featured in gift baskets at the Country Music Festival Awards and the 2013 Grammy Awards. In addition to world class truffles, Chubby Chipmunk also offers the rare chocolate, Fortunato No. 4, which comes from the Pure Nacional plant. Once thought to be extinct, this rare type of cacao plant hailing from Peru offers a chocolate experience unlike that of any other and Chubby Chipmunk is proud to be the exclusive retailer of this chocolate in South Dakota.
The arrival of Chubby Chipmunk in the Hotel Alex Johnson brings luxury and decadence to a new level. Guests may stop by for a truly extraordinary taste experience at the new lobby storefront of Chubby Chipmunk, then pair the chocolate with a freshly brewed beverage from Seattle’s Best Coffee and enjoy the historic splendor of the Hotel Alex Johnson lobby, celebrating its 85th anniversary this year.
