Updated 11/9/2024. A cool building. Nice views of downtown Rapid City. It is a nice hotel. It was a pretty solid value for the money. I keep booking this place because it is one of the nicest hotels in the area. I've also had fantastic service. Which makes coming back here really nice. This particular stay. I ended up with a freshly updated room. The rooms are not big. But for a historic building like this that can be expected. But I find myself coming back again and again because I really like this spot. Conveniently located in downtown Rapid City, you can walk pretty much anywhere you need to. This is a good hotel.
The Hotel Alex Johnson delivered again! This was my third stay at the Hotel Alex Johnson in two years. My first two were two years ago. I am the type of business traveler who keeps track of not just hotels but of the particular rooms in which I would like to stay again. Consistency is very important to me. So, I was a little surprised at how much things have changed. It looks like the Hotel Alex Johnson refreshed its rooms; so, while I demand consistency, the change was a pleasant surprise. The only complaint I had with the refresh is that a standing floor lamp had a 5000 Kelvin LED bulb. As it was not as warm as the 3000 Kelvin bulbs used in all of the other lamps, use of that lamp left that area of the room looking sterile and flooded with a harsh cold white light. In terms of size, the rooms can be described as cozy but not in the way that a boutique in Manhattan will use to describe as being extraordinarily tiny. You don’t have to leave the hotel for food, drink or Starbucks. There is an Irish themed bar and Starbucks off the lobby but where the hotel shines for dining is Vertex, which is at the top of the hotel. The restaurant has fantastic views and great food although I thought that some of the pricing on the single malt scotches was a little steep. By the way, there are outdoor fire “pits” that keep the outdoor deck relatively warm.If you seek food or drink elsewhere, the hotel’s location could not be better, Tally’s is across the street but make sure to make reservations. There are many other options all less than two blocks away.If you are looking for a place to stay while on vacation with that someone special or just on a business trip, look no further than the Hotel Alex Johnson.Pro tip: If you are checking in on a Saturday and leaving on Sunday, consider the street parking, which ends at 5pm on Saturday and is free all day on Sunday, instead of using the valet.
A bit old, a bit expensive guess you call famous hotels like this " full of charm" Stayed during Halloween.
Dinner was delicious. Very ver expensive.
Holy Moly this is a BEAUTIFUL historic downtown hotel with the prettiest views in the city! Chris was accommodating and made the best drinks! The fire pits, service and quality of the hospitality is what makes people come back time and time again! Thank you for everything, and I look forward to keeping on coming back every time I'm in Rapid City.
Definitely worth a stay! Comfortable clean rooms, the rooftop bar is great, and Cynthia at the front desk was both extremely helpful AND charming. Definitely want to stay here again!
Rooftop bar was very cool!A fire feature kept us warm when the cool breeze blew.Drinks were tasty, and ½ price for members...
There's a lot of good things to say about the hotel and a few things that aren't so great. Overall the hotel itself has a lot of charm.
If you’re coming to Rapid City, there is no other place to give you the best all-around, excellent experience! From the valet to the front desk and every restaurant, you will be pampered on your stay!
It is an interesting place with a lot of old history and right in the center of the city.
I can’t wait to go back and will forever stay at the Hotel Alex Johnson! Cool, historic, perfectly located….and super comfortable! Loved it!!
Beautiful hotel. Good sized, right downtown Rapid City. Staff was very friendly and upbeat and polite. Be aware you have to use your room key to access the evaluators, Be aware the valet is very expensive. Just a few FYI for your information. Really nice Irish pub to relax next door. Awesome views of the city.
Right downtown in the historic district of Rapid City. The hotel is old, but the rooms are upgraded and the staff is delightful. The view from the rooftop bar is outstanding. Highly recommended.
Great stay and hotel!! Thanks to Mason at the front desk for excellent hospitality and service!! The breakfast at the Irish pub, Paddy O’Neils, was excellent too!! Loved our experience staying in the Presidential suite!!
The Hotel Alex Johnson is definitely a downtown landmark in Rapid City. The staff is nice and the amenities (shop, bar, Starbucks, etc) are an added bonus.
Super cool hotel with so much history. Cynthia is one of the most competent and thoughtful employees I’ve ever had a chance to interact with. I loved the text chat feature that I was able to use throughout my stay and how quickly Cynthia was to help me or solve any bumps in my stay. The rooftop restaurant was delicious (just like Cynthia said it would be) and an awesome start to our stay. So glad there was space for us and we had such a cool window seat.Starbucks in the lobby with a cute (and delicious) chocolate shop inside- awesome. The Irish pub connected to the hotel served delicious salads and wraps at dinner (plus lots of great beers on tap) and a great avocado toast in the morning. If we ever return to Rapid City, we will definitely stay here and I will tell all my friends this is the hotel to choose. The only thing I would change about our trip was the valet staff. We would text for the car, sit around for 20 minutes in the lobby and then talk to a staff member who just hadn’t checked the app to notice we’d requested the car. We tried to use a parking app to find a spot so we could skip the valet but there’s nothing nearby. The female valet (with a son I heard her mention), she was always on top of everything, but the males working there were not very observant. The older male valet with the mustache was also on top of getting cars when requested.
I loved staying here. The view from the rooftop is amazing, the rooms are clean and nice, and the atmosphere of the hotel in general is lovely. The staff is very helpful and professional as well.
The employees make the difference. I would like to give a shout out to Masen at the front desk. He provides excellent service with kindness. We also enjoyed taking to Cynthia about the history and the ghosts of the hotel. I wish I had her name but the server at breakfast was so delightful. She had long grayish hair. Neat hotel with lots of history. The rooftop bar was a treat.
Great old historic hotel.
Wonderful Curio property. Accommodating staff. Clean room and comfortable beds. Stayed two nights and enjoyed Paddy O’Neils, Vertex & Starbucks . Hotel has a historic presence in the town. Renovations appeared to be ongoing they were mindful with pardon our progress notifications,Valet parking definitely worth while. Car was brought down timely.Hotel is an easy drive to Mount Rushmore
